Chrono Trigger is one of the many staple RPGs of the SNES Generation. It’s complex story, unique battle system, and memorable characters make it one of the best RPG’s to date. Chrono Trigger doesn’t rely on random battle events, even on the overworld map. In this game, you will be able to see the enemies (barring a few surprises) you could encounter, and choose to avoid them if you wish.

Chrono Trigger starts you off on your way to the millennium festival. From here, you can take part in minigames, chatter with townsfolk, and just enjoy the party. But this is all brought to an end very quickly when a certain girl decides to run you over.

The game’s difficulty is a slight bit harder than other RPG’s in this area, which could leave some players stuck later in the game. Thankfully, there isn’t any mindless grinding to be had here, Chrono Trigger’s boss fights are more about technique and hitting weak spots with the right attacks than about number crunching. At one point fairly early in the game, a court trial takes place, and your actions at the very begginning of the game determines the outcome of the case. Its this kind of amazing attention to detail that turns this game from average RPG fare into greatness.

This RPG hits all the right notes, and remains a Squaresoft masterpiece to this day.

The control is sloppy and hideous (quite hard to do in the days of the SNES), the graphics are laughable at best. Very shoddy animation, very simple sprites. The music is horrendous as well.

In this game, everything hurts you, and do I mean everything. Skateboarders, Fences, Hunters (shooting a St. Bernard??), lamps, and kittens. Yes, kittens. You read that right. Spinning kittens. To attack these enemies, you must bark at them multiple times. “What kitten? Didn’t get the hint the first time? FINE! Take 3 more ear blasts!!”. That’s how attacking is. Wait… I forgot to mention getting wet. Yes, bathe in a fine yard sprinkler and shake that water off! This rids the screen of enemies.

Brett’s Review:

This week I decided to review, in my opinion, one of the funniest games I have played for the SNES. Aerobiz Supersonic is a business simulation game that is very unique due to its premise. As soon as you get to the main menu you will have to pick which year you want to begin your game. The game will then give you four different periods of time to start in and end in. You can start as early as when mainstream flights first started, or you can start in the “future of flight”, which takes you to a time after the game was even made. After you pick the period of time you want to start in, you must customize your airline and pick a home base on one of seven different parts of the world. Then you must pick a big city for a “home base”.

After that its a complex game of getting bids for flights and running flights from your home base to a city, or a regional hub in other countries. While you’re doing this, you must negotiate with countries to have flights, purchase planes, and build business ventures to up your revenue. This game is very unique for this reason: while you are facing 3 other computer companies for control of the aerobiz, depending on which “period of time” you play in, certain historical events take place. For instance if you had played in an earlier time period, you can see cities that were once owned by Britain gain independence, and now those cities will be part of a new country (such as Kingston and Jamaica).

There will also be times where tourism is booming in a certain city, or civil wars and natural disasters, which will ruin your business if it happens in a major city you are involved in. To win the game you must have the number one business in 5 out of 7 regions, which is a lot harder than it looks. If you have a lot of time on your hands, play this game, it gets to be very involving and can be a lot of fun, but only if you figure out what you are doing.

The game starts you off relatively underpowered to face the tasks ahead, just like any good Mega Man game. This one starts off a bit differently, with you getting very beat up and having to be rescued by Zero. After this, the game takes a slightly different, but nostalgic, Mega Man feel. Tons of enemies, furious action, and this time, upgrades scattered around the various levels. Wall kicks, and (eventually) a plethora of other moves keeps the game fresh and interesting.

The Mega Man series is one of my favorites, and I hope you like this one to. It takes you back to a day when Mega Man wasn’t whored out by Capcom every three months. I’m not saying that the Mega Man: Battle Network games were bad, they were quite enjoyable, but none of them retain the feel of the original NES and SNES offerings.

Tom’s Review:

Wow… the Super Nintendo…. I have a lot of fond memories of the SNES, but some of the best were had with Donkey Kong Country. Although not the first of Rare’s games, this was (and still is, arguably) the most popular. Donkey Kong Country featured pre-rendered graphics, meaning they were stored in memory and could be called upon in an instant. You see, before Rare implemented this, games were still using the old system of ‘Draw it when its needed’. Needless to say, this slowed things down, and processors couldn’t render a beautiful (read: Donkey Kong caliber) sprite without taking a long time. So game devs had to stick to simple graphics.

You probably know all about this game, but I’m going to tell you about something you don’t know. The biggest piece of epic fail television I have ever seen. Yes… I’m talking about Donkey Kong Country: Legend of the Crystal Coconut. Yes, that god-awful CG television series you all either A. Never saw (lucky you), or B. Forgot about. I caught a good three episodes when I was a kid (three times the dose necessary to kill an infant), and I couldn’t take anymore. I would watch the Super Mario Brothers Super Show all day long… but this kind of television should be considered child abuse. It was devoid of plot, devoid of any references to the source material, devoid of anything that would make a good children’s television show, and devoid of anything that is more enjoyable than being kicked in the face. Epic Fail indeed.

Luckily, I’m not here to bring you really bad video game related television, I’m here to bring you roms and classic gaming. Donkey Kong Country was the second best selling game on the <strike>NES</strike> SNES (Super Mario World being the first), and its quite easy to see why. Not only did it have graphics, but it had gameplay, and an amazing soundtrack (which I am still very fond of). Enjoy this one, I’m probably gonna play through a bunch of it myself.
