Through the Cracks – Cash Back

Hello everyone, it’s Keith here, and I would like to start something a little different here on 72 PC. I know I have kinda been known as the fountain of Video Game trivia on the podcasts and minicasts, but I would like to draw you attention to another passion of mine…Movies. I will be doing a monthly post entitled “Through the cracks” where I will be reviewing a movie that you might not have heard of that I think you should! A movie that has slipped “through the cracks” if you will.

With that out of the way, lets begin with the first installment. Today I will  be talking about a movie entitled “Cashback.” This movie started out as a 18 minute short film about a guy who was just trying to pass his time at work, and blossomed into something so much more. The film revolves around a art student by the name of Ben (played by Sean Biggerstaff) who, after a messy breakup, develops a severe case insomnia. He then decides to trade in the time of his restless nights for “cash back,” as he puts it, by working at a supermarket third shift. Here you are introduced to many colorful characters and are shown how each of them passes the time of the night shift in their own unique, and sometimes unorthodox, ways. Ben’s artistic minds passes his time by doing the opposite, imagining he can freeze time. With this new found “power” he observes the world through and artistic mind, undressing women and sketching images of their naked bodies. I know what you are thinking, this guy is a pervert….right? Yet, the narration of Ben during these scenes brings you into his world where everything is beautiful and everything can be art. This movie was much more than what I thought it would be when I picked it up at my local movie rental store, and it is one of the greatest finds in a long while. A true thought provoking movie, that takes you away from the normal and brings you into the artistic mindset. I give “Cashback” a 9 out of 10 and highly recommend you rushing out right now and at least renting it!
