Remembering Your Childhood So You Don't Have To

Kirby Super Star

Ah, yes, another Kirby game. They aren’t too, too common around these parts, but whenever one rolls into town, I’ll be sure to take a gander. This time we’re taking a look at Kirby Super Star. Released in 1996, this game was put out close to the end of the SNES lifespan. Kirby Super Star isn’t like the other games in the series. Instead of being one big chunk of adventure, Kirby Super Star is broken up into five different main episodes. None of them take a ton of time to complete, but the game never seems to drag on. Not the longest game in existance, but still a lot of fun.

Super Star brings some real interesting ideas to the table. No longer are you subject to just one move per power, some moves can be charged up and used in different ways. You also have the brand new option to turn your ability into a computer-controlled helper. Depending on the ability, these can range from cannon-fodder level of usefulness to a wonderful battle-hardened buddy. It can be better than this though.. they could have at least let a second player control the helper and do a co-op sort of… wait a minute… yea.. That’s in here too. As usual, HAL Laboratory and Sakurai are way ahead of the game, bringing things to the table that hadn’t been seen in a ton of games before it, but is seen as an integral part of gaming today.

Each main episode of the game has its own feel to it, none feeling better or worse than the others, just different. Super Star is a wonderful addition to the Kirby universe, and a wonderful addition to the SNES library in general. Hope you enjoy this one, it’s got some of my favorite mini-games in it. Kirby Super Star, ladies and gentlemen!
